Barista Hustle is putting on an event in London on the 30th of June. It’s happening at the legendary Prufrock Coffee at 23-25 Leather Lane.

To begin the event, Dr Anja Rahn will talk to us about the first coffee scientist, Count Rumford. Rumford was a scientist working in the late 18th and early 19th centuries who gave us the ‘Rumford’ brewer; discovered aroma loss and convection currents; and among many other important innovations, also pioneered the soup kitchen.

Dr Rahn has worked as the Principal Coffee Chemist at JDE-Peet’s, she’s been the Aroma and Flavour Lead at ZHAW’s Coffee Excellence Centre, and is currently producing lots of free coffee related content on her website too. Check out her recent 4-part piece on Rumford’s life and works here.

Our second speaker on the night will be multidisciplinary scientist and author, Professor Steven Abbott who will be explaining all the science and the many innovations which he and his sons have put into designing coffee’s newest brew method: The UX Method

After the talks, Jem Challender and the BH Education Team assisted by Mark Abbott will conduct some brewing displays, giving you a chance to taste some UX brews.

All the participants, together with our hosts Prufrock, are kindly donating their time for this event. All proceeds will be donated to the Felix Project — a food redistribution charity that rescues surplus food from supermarkets, wholesalers, and restaurants and delivers it for free to frontline charities.
