Casanare lies at the heart of the Llanos Orientales (Eastern Plains), the large savannah that covers much of the Orinoco river basin. The low-lying land in this region is traditionally known for cattle and rice farming. Oil deposits were discovered in the 1990s, and Casanare has since become Colombia’s biggest oil producer.
